The Rockwell Rams were 0-1 as they were getting ready to play the giants, who are the worst team in their league. Ben had been working with Shawn all week, even though he asked Sam and Coop to join but they said no. Ben had seen slight improvements in both Shawn’s performance and attitude. But his concern was whether or not it would show up in the game, where it actually counts. The giants scored first and they were up 8-0 in the first quarter.…

Missouri’s Geology Missouri is home to a wide variety of geological history as well as treasure which can be found throughout the state. From its wonderful variety of caves to the rock columns in the state parks of the south as well as the mines. The soil is as rich in diversity as the plant and animal life, from the north to the south as well as the east to the west. It can be dated back as far as before there was life on this planet and at one time even had an ocean over it. It is truly amazing what one can find as they begin to dig in the dirt.…

Frack Off Marissa and Derek Smith and their kids from Pennsylvania cannot live a healthy life any longer. There are ten Hydraulic Fracking wells on their property; one in particular is hundred feet away from their home. From the fracking wells in nearly spitting distance of Marissa’s home, her family is getting sick and they are no longer able to swim, fish or play in the streams near their house. Five generations of their family have lived in the same house and swam, fished and played in the same streams. The family is no longer capable of those things because of Hydraulic fracking.…

Trials of the Earth, a memoir authored by Mary Mann Hamilton, describes the incredible struggle that Mary Mann Hamilton and her family endured throughout the entirety of her life while moving throughout the Mississippi Delta. Throughout the memoir, Hamilton goes into great depth describing the trials and tribulations each year brought to her family and families they met along their journey. This account on life in the Mississippi Delta during the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century shows how women were extremely driven and motivated people who strived to accomplish numerous goals. The work Hamilton and countless other women completed inside and outside of the household was invaluable to the continuation…
“FRACK OFF!” reads a flimsy yard sign as cars zoom along Peninsula road. The sign highlights a debate across Northern Michigan, the Midwest, the United States, and the rest of the world. Our world relies heavily on fossil fuels to power our everyday actions. Driving, cooking, heating homes. Horizontal Hydraulic Fracturing.…
GEL 101 How does taking GEL 101 impact a college career and insure college readiness at Cal State, San Marcos? GEL, thought to be a breeze for freshman, made me have a new outlook and experience towards college. At first I took the class for an easy A, but came to realize that it has help me more than any other class I took. As an incoming freshman I was not prepared for the sleepless nights in attempting to keep up with homework and friends.…
The Environmental Protection Agency defines frackings as “A well stimulation process used to maximize the extraction of underground resources; including oil, natural gas, geothermal energy, and even water”(Environmental Protection Agency). This process, employed to release natural gas involves drilling deep into the ground and shooting a high pressure water solution into rock formations in order to release the gas inside. Although the history of fracking can be traced back to the 1940’s, it wasn’t until 2003 that was incorporated commercially on a massive scale not only in the United States, but also across the world. This turning point in scale caused immediate backlash from environmentalists across the country. The controversy being: while fracking has completely revolutionised the energy industry, the environmental risks it poses cannot be overlooked.…
Crumple zones are structural features mainly used in automobiles such as cars and trucks. They are designed to absorb the energy from the impact during a traffic collision by controlled deformation. Normally located at the front part of the vehicle, in order to absorb the impact of a head-on collision, though they may be found on other parts of vehicles as well. Crumple zones, are secondary safety features, this is due to the fact that secondary safety features only come into play once you have an accident and are designed to reduce injuries to you and your passengers. Crumple zones are used to absorb energy from a collision, which happens as a result of an accident, therefore making it a secondary feature.…
Unlike the East coast, the natural disaster that is most common in the West coast is earthquakes. As common as earthquakes are, there are only so much we know about the elements involved; such as fault lines. The topics discussed are what and where earthquakes occur, its history, and earthquake preparation in California. Earthquakes are known worldwide as a shaking of the ground. However, this just how people see the phenomenon where destruction follows.…
The recent increase in injection induced seismicity is caused by a corresponding increase in wastewater disposal in the central United States. The earthquake rate increase in Oklahoma, where the vast majority of the increase has occurred (585 of 688 M ≥3 earthquakes in the central United States in 2014), corresponds to a doubling of the wastewater disposal rate in the state from 1999 to 2013 (Shultz 2014). Near the town of Prague, Oklahoma, the biggest earthquake ever recorded in Oklahoma occurred having a magnitude of 5.6 and many seismologists believe that it was caused by fracking through disposal wells. The theory behind the earthquakes propose that the sheer volume of fluid that is injected into the ground is directly proportional to the magnitude of the quake. Figure 2…
The Geological Society of America’s news site provides a variety of geological news sources from research papers to a live twitter feed. The purpose of the site is to provide a hub where someone can find recent research and current events in geology. Most of the content being shown focuses on geology. However, some posts will be heavily focused on biology, chemistry, or physics since geology can rely on knowledge in any of those disciplines. An example of this is the research on “Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria prior to the Great Oxidation Event from the 2.52 Ga Gamohaan Formation of South Africa.”…
Tsunamis: what are these exactly, how do they occur, and why are known to be so deadly? Tsunamis are massive sea waves that are spawned from earthquakes generated underneath the ocean at tectonic plate boundaries. Although earthquakes are known to be the main cause of tsunamis, these enormous waves can occur due to occurrences such as rapid changes in the atmospheric pressure or volcanic eruptions. These waves are formed in a series, sometimes referred to as a “wave train.” There is never just one wave when a tsunami occurs.…
