Julie Adkin 's “The View from the Front Desk: Addressing Homelessness and the Homeless in Dallas” explores upon the prevalent homelessness issue by studying one of the meanest cities; Dallas. She explores the misconceptions of homelessness and the homeless by expanding in depth about the reality of their situation. Adkin also discusses the reactions and actions taken by governmental agencies and nongovernmental agencies to alleviate the extremity of the persistent problem. Two important points she stresses is the lack of opportunities and resources the homeless have and the problem with the strategies used by national and local agencies to deal with the rampant homelessness issue. Clearly, the problem of homelessness is not adequately dealt…
21 year old Dylann Roof opened fire one Wednesday night at historical Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Before opening fire, Roof spent an hour inside the church attending a prayer meeting with his soon to be victims. Witnesses say Roof stood up suddenly and said he was there to “shoot black people”, and that’s when he began to shoot. Other statements witnesses say Roof said were: “You’ve raped our women, and you are taking over the country… I have to do what I have to do.” Eight people died at the scene.…
It is programs like this that work towards the bettering of our nation. It is a sad case that poverty has progressed so much that shelter has become a luxury for some. Everyone deserves to have a shelter and access to necessities. Each day the number of homeless families, orphans, and deaths increase.…
Homelessness has become an epidemic in America. It is a situation that is dismissed and ignored because people like to blame the homeless for their own dismay. People like to state that homelessness is a result of laziness and all they need to do is get a job. I never had to worry about whether I was going to have food on the table or a place to sleep. I have been fortunate enough to live a life where I have everything I need to live comfortably.…
Public Relations Plan NCH The National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) began in 1981 is a national network of people who are currently experiencing or who have experienced homelessness. It has a single mission: To prevent, end and protect homelessness and their civil rights while supporting the needs of those experiencing homelessness. It is our objective to cultivate the message of the National Coalition for the Homeless to spread significance of the care around the U.S, make the systemic and attitudinal changes important to avoid and end homelessness.…
We have learned largely by life experiences that hard work payoff, but when we are broken by hard times, some hard working individuals seem to forget their knowledge and self-worth. Consequently, this lack self-esteem leads most of the hard working individuals to make poor choices. Ultimately, this leads those individuals to chaos and disastrous events that destroy their family security, dreams and achievements. We must remember homelessness can happen to anyone at any time, but it is an individual choice whether to work his//her way out of homelessness or stay to request donation in the street for that rest of his/her life.…
In recent years, homelessness has increased rapidly, especially in the county of Los Angeles. From conducting search on the keyword “homelessness,” I found that there are a lot of people in the Los Angeles county who has been homeless for a while and it has been increasing continuously. According to the LA times, “L.A. sees another sharp rise in homelessness and outdoor tents” by Gale Holland and Peter Jamison shows that homelessness developed in the last year by nearly 47,000 people in the street and shelters regardless of an exhaustive federal push that has cut the levels of homeless veterans by nearly a third. People without homes have to face many obstacles. In the city of Los Angeles, the population raised steadily by nearly 5.7% percent…
These methods include: the influence and push of housing programs, to guarantee that these programs will organize a new and stable home for individuals encountering extreme difficulty with homelessness, being able to recognize and connect with individuals encountering unending homelessness and immediately cause difference in their life for the better, to lower boundaries to the housing programs through group wide reception of “Housing First.” Seeking help from congress and looking for extra assets from Congress to make new units of lasting stable homes in essential in this plan. These methods were thought up by The Interagency Working Group on Ending Chronic Homelessness. They have built up a procedure to end homelessness in 2017 by expanding the accessibility of steady homing, and helping groups draw in more homeless individuals to home them easy and quickly. Providing a homeless individual with a shelter yes is helpful, but a group called Community Solutions recognized that giving these individuals a hospitable home with all the essentials to a healthy and comfortable environment created an even bigger impact (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness).…
However, this organization requires help from volunteers and neighbors to make their project successful. According to this article, the reason why existence of poverty is not accepted by most American is due to the fact they uphold a stereotypical image about what poverty looks like. If the images shown do not portray a shabby shelter along with emaciated children and family, then the guidelines for poverty have not been met, and it is further impossible for Americans to think that they can can have homes which do not follow the stereotypical image. The organization uses these methods to get people to donate for them. However, the idea that isn’t accepted is those who can barely live from one paycheck to another, or cannot get a high paying source of income.…
Many Americans have several misconceptions about homelessness or homeless people. Homelessness affects people of all races, age, religions, and genders. The horrifyingly common belief that homeless people are all bums, criminals, drug addicts, and mentally ill that are trying to scalp off of government welfare programs, or the working-class’s pocket-money is not only dehumanizing, it is entirely incorrect. Additionally, the ideology that homelessness is just a housing problem or worse, a temporary condition that most people fall out of remains disturbing. These misconceptions are dangerous and interfere with any systemic attempts to help the homeless population.…
The steadily increasing rate of homelessness in Chicago is a social justice issue that is difficult to ignore. It is nearly impossible to walk down Michigan Avenue without noticing the countless shivering, hungry people begging for spare change. But the people we see on our everyday route to school and work are only a very small portion of the thousands of people suffering throughout the city. The National Health Care for the Homeless Council defines homelessness as “…an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; in a shelter, mission, single room occupancy facilities, abandoned building or vehicle; or in any other instable or non-permanent situation”(1). Chicagoans may think they know about the issue of homelessness…

In a study discussed in USA Today in reference to the year 2007, roughly 1.6 million individuals entered shelters or other forms of homeless housing (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2011). It is impossible to measure with 100% accuracy the amount of individuals who have experienced homelessness over the years, however research has shown that over the past few decades the capacity of transitional housing and emergency shelters has tripled, in order to attempt to accommodate the rising rates of individuals without homes. Although the exact amount of individuals who are considered homeless cannot be calculated, it can be estimated that nearly 3.5 million individuals experience homelessness every year, 1.35 million of them being children (National…
In a world filled with materialism, self obsession, and greed, it is easy for people to forget what truly matters. At the core of human existence, it is undeniable that people cannot survive alone.
