Rainey gave a small sigh and pressed the phone tighter between her cheek and shoulder. "It's been nice talking to you Karen, but I really have to get some sleep," she said. "I haven't been getting much rest lately, and I can't stay up all night like I used to in college."

"Oh, you have to go so soon? I feel like it's been weeks since we last talked," said Karen as she clenched her hand around the phone. She suddenly stood up and paced around her old gingham sofa.

"It wasn't that long ago," said Rainey, exasperated. "I've just been feeling so tired and old lately, but I'll call you next week. Resting against the creaky door for just a minute, Rainey bit back a sound of frustration. It wasn't like she never called Karen. She just didn't call her every week like Karen expected. Karen let out a loud laugh, drawing Rainey's attention back to their conversation.

"I'm the one that's old. Thirty is still a spring chicken." She nodded her head even though Rainey couldn't see her and made another circuit around the couch, avoiding the garish green footstool that her sister-in-law had given her five years

Throughout the short story “The Weather” by Deborah Willis there are many present themes, perhaps the most common and recurring one is how people can affect each other and their relationships, and how fast they can change between “passion and sweetness and sadness.” The ever changing relationships between the three main characters Edith, Braden, Rae and even Nina, the non-existent mother, are a constant drama throughout the story. The changes between Edith and her father is ever-changing, in the beginning her hostility towards her father is increasingly present when Braden, her father recalls how she said to her mother after the storm “Even then, she used that cold tone. “He’s here, mom.…

We all know those people that can not peel themselves from their technology, whether it’s the CEO of a major business or a teenage girl, they walk with their faces lit with the screaming brightness of a phone. In modern society, if a person is found on social media it is considered cool, while reading is not. Recent society has become caught up in the latest movies, fashion trends, and social media. Ray Bradbury wrote of this happening all the way back in the 1950s! He wrote science fiction where humans have become obsessed with technology, nowadays, that is called reality.…

For me, Black Rain is just another prime example of why I consider Ridley Scott to be a mixed bag as a Director. Sure he’s definitely made some classics like Blade Runner, Alien, and Gladiator but other films that I’ve seen in Scott’s filmography (Robin Hood, Exodus, and G.I. Jane) seems like he gets so caught up into creating visual atmospheres (especially in this one) to the point of where he loses focus on maintaining a genuine plotting or narrative. Black Rain is an 80’s recycled tough cop action film about two xenophobic cops (Douglas and Garcia) who happen to stumble into the middle of a Yakuza killing-taking place in a New York City restaurant. Eventually, they make an arrest and are ordered to escort the gang member back to Japan where the two cops get further involved with the Yakuza.…

As I looked out of the wet, speckled window pane of my grandparents old house, I noticed the gutters were bursting at the seams with rain water, and grabbed a pack of cigarettes from a nearby table. Suddenly, a flash of lightening lit up the dark, southern sky of Jamestown, Tennessee, and the instant vibration of thunder felt like an earthquake under my feet. I shivered watching the electrical, rain storm take over like a fiery beast this early, fall afternoon, and pulled my last cigarette from a worn Marlboro pack that had seen better days.…
