The raft allows Jim and Huck to float away from Shore Society and redefine normal expectations and relationships. On the raft Huck can be friends and even have to rely on each other, whereas Shore Society looks down upon it. When Huck and Jim take turns keeping watch at night, “[Jim] didn’t call [Huck] when it was [his] turn. He often done that.” And also when Huck finds out they are being chased he warns Jim that he must “hump him[self]...There ain’t a minute to lose.” Huck acknowledges that they are together, whereas in Shore Society whites and blacks hardly associate with each other. Huck and Jim are exploring and visit a cave together, Huck thinks it “is nice…[he] wouldn’t want to be nowhere else but [t]here.” Huck is his content and comfort with spending his time with a black man in a place where he is free.
Raft Society changes both Jim and Huck’s views of equality. Although Huck feels obligated to be respectful of Jim, which would be looked down upon in Shore Society, he struggles with the idea of Jim’s freedom. They both escape their unfortunate realities when they enter the raft and find comfort in their relationship. Huck and Jim’s friendship becomes stronger as their journey continues, and they find that they must rely on one another.
