Radiometric Dating And Half-Life

Improved Essays
A fossil’s age can be determined by a method known as Relative Dating. If the age of the rock beneath the layer in which the fossil is found is known, then the fossil will be younger than that rock according to the Law of Superposition. Or if the rock layer above is known, then the fossil will be older than that layer. Radiometric Dating uses the rate at which radioactive isotopes decay in igneous and metamorphic rocks. The rate of decay is known by the half-life of the isotope. The half-life is the average amount of time an atom of a radioactive element remains in its original form. When the half-life elapses, half of the original igneous or metamorphic rock will have decayed and formed a different type of rock such as a sedimentary rock.

The analysis of the strata below the grave and the extraction of any datable artifacts is not possible with out greatly disturbing the cemetery. No logs or timbers are used in the grave except for possibly the coffin to which we do not have access, so dendrochronology can not be used. Radiocarbon dating requires an organic sample which, again, is not available and this absolute dating process is not effective for dates less than 400 years ago. Potassium-argon dating, which is used to date volcanic rocks 80,000 years old or older and uranium series dating, which is associated with travertine at least 10,000 years old are also not applicable. Fission-track dating analyzes the damage caused by the division of uranium-238 atoms to determine age.…

It’s first hard to find fossil leaves but also it’s hard to determine if it’s an actual fossil leave because the shape may come off as a fossil leaf, though it may not be one. Another obstacle to this solution is that it can take a while to find fossils that are still in tact from 100 million years ago. Over time, the rocks could break apart from its’ original full piece and from that rock breaking, it can mess with all info collected because if a fossil leaf was found, then one of the most important parts could be missing like the leaf or because the rock is so old, it may be hard even to see any fossils (malvaceae). One final obstacle to this solution is that testing data for climate change and ecosystems may only depend on one fossil if only one is found. One fossil may give off inaccurate data because it was mistakenly placed their which can give you the wrong info…

I took this story as a mans point of view in how to date. The author made this story very relatable and to not only men but woman could understand it. It reminded me of some men that I know and how they think. I have six nephews so it made me think of them and how I hope they do not behave with their future girlfriends. He states that young men are under constant pressure of trying to fit in with society and make them seem more desirable over others.…

Recently, scientists have discovered fossils of an extinct species of turtles that particularly have snouts as noses, similar to a pig. However, because of its snout, it was named Golden's bacon turtle, or Arvinachelys golden. Usually, turtles have one nasal passage in their skulls because of how fleshy their nostrils are. Arvinachelys golden was found by a team from Natural History Museum of Utah and discovered the fossil at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. In addition, this turtle also had a near completed forelimb, partial hindlimbs, and vertebrae from the neck and tail, unlike any other turtle ever recorded.…

This decay can be divided into 3 major different types of decay- alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma decay. Alpha decay is one method that unstable atoms will use to become additional stable. Throughout radioactive decay, an atom's nucleus sheds 2 protons And 2 neutrons during a packet that scientists decision an particle. Since AN atom loses 2 protons throughout radioactive decay, it changes from one part to a different. as an example, when undergoing radioactive decay, an atom of atomic number 92 (with 92 protons) becomes an atom with an atomic number of 90 (with 90 protons). In physical science, disintegration is a sort of nuclear reaction within which a nucleon is reworked into a nucleon, or contrariwise, within AN atomic nucleus.…

Before Christopher Columbus “discovered” America in 1492, discoveries have recently found proof of inhabitants as early as 12,021 B.C.. However, the most widely accepted theory regarding early immigration to the Americas involves the Bering land bridge, a piece of land that once connected Alaska and Siberia. However, the land bridge theory, or Clovis theory, dates back to only 10, 984 B.C., almost 1,000 years after humans have been known to occupy North America. Two alternate theories are called the “Monte Verde” and “Kennewick Man” theories, allow me to explain. Tom Dillehay, and American anthropologist, was studying the Monte Verde site, Chile, in 1979.…

To this, I invoke the ideas of carbon dating. Essentially, carbon dating is determining the age of something through the proportions of Carbon-12 and Carbon-14 it has. Some may argue that carbon dating isn’t always accurate, and this is true. Sometimes, carbon dating doesn’t give experimenters exact dates; in fact, scientists have to assume a lot about the date. However, I still maintain the fact that carbon dating is a highly practiced and constantly evolving science, and it still provides us with sometimes unspecific but constantly accurate…

There are also methods like carbon dating and absolute dating. Some people believe in the Bible which describes the earth being created but never mentions a time so no one knows how long ago it actually happened. Other people do not believe in the Bible and try to use scientific methods to uncover the time of the Earth's creation but one thing holds true between both is that dating can help uncover this secret but they are not the only ones. There are more ways to date fossils such as radiocarbon dating, carbon…

There are several areas in the natural world where the process of exponential decay arises from random processes. Whenever a material decays at a rate in proportion to its amount, this material represents the process of exponential decay. Exponential decay can be described using the mathematical model y=a×e^(-bx). A prominent example of naturally occurring random exponential decay is the process of radioactive decay.…

Forensic Carbon-14 Dating is a carbon dating system that is used to identify the age of unknown remains for anthropological and archaeological purposes. To help determine the year of death, Forensic Anthropologist use radiocarbon and inject them in to the soft tissues found inside the bone. Mainly soft tissues that are used for this advanced technology are found in hair, fingernails, and blood. The radiocarbon levels found in these three biological components give the most accurate time of post mortem due to these match identically to the contemporary…

Recently Earth has been slowing down the number of volcanoes erupting recently, but also a slow-down in sedimentation and a noticeable lull in tectonic plate movement. The Paleoproterozoic era was a significant time in Earth’s history. It was at this time when the atmosphere got its first taste of oxygen and also the first global glaciation event. But this was also a time where other uniformistisic routines shut down. Earth's mantle used to be much hotter than it is today and volcanoes allowed the mantle to cool over time, and geologic processes are thought to slow down.…

One method often used to date objects is radiocarbon dating, which works by comparing isotopes of carbon and their half-lives. This is an especially accurate method because it is unfazed by chemical, temperature, and physical changes so the timing will be correct no matter what. Another form of dating is using soil, sediment, or peat build-up. Since the build-up of these materials occurs in chronological order if undisturbed, it can show a timeline of objects and events. It can also show environmental events like fires to give an idea of what the climate might have been like and if there were any significant weather events.…
