Exposure charts are very important in the radiology field. They provide consistency in the quality of image production (Carlton, Richard R., Arlene McKenna. Adler, and Eugene D. Frank, 2006). Each site has preprogrammed control consoles for each exposure. However, although these are preset, these are just a suggested starting point. The data is collected through different patients acquiring the same exam. For example, I collected data on every foot exam. So for every foot exam, I grabbed calipers, a device used to measure thickness of a body part, and measured the foot thickness. Some destructive diseases of the foot could be osteoporosis, condition that causes the bone to become fragile (Osteoporosis, 2014), and degenerative arthritis, breaks down the cartilage in the joints. The two types of charts I am going to produce are fixed and variable kVp. In a fixed kVp system, kVp is held constant. The mAs is varied to achieve the appropriate IR exposure. There are many benefits to a fixed kVp chart. They decrease patient dose, lengthens exposure latitude, more information on the image, and consistency of image. However, these images tend to produce more scatter radiation, which provides a lower contrast. The variable kVp technique chart is one in which the kVp is used is varied depending on the measured body part thickness. One advantage is that it permits small incremental changes in the exposure to compensate for variations in the body part thickness. They also produce higher-contrast images.
