In this project we were meant to study the amount of radiation the students of Chavez High School are exposed to. The amount of radiation was accumulated through a survey that was handed out to each grade level and according to their responses we would sum up the total and give an average of how much radiation intake each student could possibly have. This research project was done so as to give us a taste of the type of research work we would have when/if we are at college. We were meant to take this as seriously as possible and expand on the idea that was provided for us. As students in this school it was a theme that we should care about since radiation intake is not always harmless. Thanks to this project …show more content…
Rontgen didn’t understand how the radioactive rays were produced and neither did anyone until Henri Becquerel was experimenting with uranium salts and discover that the rays were emitting from the salts themselves and was named “radioactivity” by Marie Curie. Radiation is produced by both natural and artificial/man-made sources. Natural sources that would produce radiation in Earth or its atmosphere would be cosmic rays that emit radiation in big rays that reach the Earth from space, rocks and debris that emit radioactive radon gas, and plants that can absorb excess radiation from the soil. Artificial radiation includes alpha particles, beta particles, x-rays and gamma rays. Though radiation was understood, when speaking of its origin, the dangers of it were not quite as known and actually caused the death of some people who worked studying radiation. Too much exposure to radiation is bad and dangerous for us we are surrounded by things that emit tiny bits of radioactivity such as rocks, plants, and animals; this type of radiation is called background radiation because it is always there in manageable amounts.
IV. Effects of Radiation
Radiation takes place when the atomic nucleus of an unstable atom decays and starts releasing ionizing particles, known as ionizing radiation. When these particles come into contact with human tissue they may cause damage if levels are high enough.
Beneficial Effects
• Stop Cancer Cell Growth with Less Treatments- Radiation treatments following surgery can help stop further cancer cell
