This book is one work of fiction that some students have to read in class.The book is about how difficult life was for people that helped a black person. Atticus, Scout’s father, is looked down upon for defending a black man in court. He gets abused along with his family and also the black man. One of the examples we found of this abuse was when Scout’s cousin, Francis, used it towards Atticus for supporting a black man. He said to Scout, “‘He’s nothin’ but a nigger-lover!’” (Lee 110). This is important because it shows how people carelessly use the n-word, especially children. Also, it shows how it is used in a discriminatory way because he says Atticus is nothing, but a “nigger-lover”. This shows that society, not only ignores racism, but accepts it. Another example that we found of the n-word being used in an insulting manner was when Mrs. Dubose, a racist member of the community, decided to criticise Atticus’s choice of defending Tom Robinson, she said, “When she drew it away, it trailed a long silver thread of saliva. “Your father’s no better …show more content…
In an article, A Dream Unrealized for Blacks, it stated “Chicago's current population of 2.7 million is nearly equal thirds black, white, and Hispanic, but most blacks still live in a separate part of town” (Bogira 2). This shows that despite there being multiple races in Chicago, blacks are the most segregated. This segregation can cause a continuous era of racism and discrimination towards black people. That is why it’s important for African Americans to be free of such immoral discrimination, the discrimination that was supposed to end many years ago. Racism is not long gone like most people believe it to be, but it’s creeping in the shadows of their negligence. This segregation will also carry onto the school environment where racism will occur due to how people grew up with it as everyday
