Racism against African-American people began in 17th century in America, when people, kidnapped from various parts of Africa arrived as slaves. Since then the black people were forced to Christianize and work for people of the higher classes. White people, who dominated over the black, took away their identity and even the elementary human rights and forced them to work for nothing. Since 17th century, black people were associated with uneducated, lowest class society, people with no identity, no choices, and people who are slaves. _____ sound more like a business deal than a wedding plan. Alphonso tries to present Celie in such a way that Mr. _____ will take her as his wife. Alphonso is advertising Celie as some kind of a helpful product, or a useful, good slave. He is “selling” Celie with her cow as a bonus. And Mr. _____ is also very glad to know that he will get not only a wife but a cow too. This is not how father would present his daughter to a man. Alphonso is not describing Celie as a person but he describes her as a useful everyday tool that one would like to have. This is a very harsh form of racism that Alphonso expresses towards his daughters. These lines prove how Alphonso is considering the marriage of his daughter as a beneficial business transaction. As if he gets to trade off an old slave, who is less useful for him, but as she comes with a cow, somebody is buying it. Racism is not only about skin color, and it does not happen only among the people of different races. Choosing a person for some personal reasons, discriminating, and enslaving him/her is also a form of racism.
