Although these things were good, they were still enslaved to the white men. In the 1950’s the civil rights movement happened. It stemmed from the idea that African Americans were inferior to the whites. African Americans were completely separated from the whites. They weren 't allowed in the same schools as whites, they were made to sit in the back of the bus, and they had different water fountains...the list goes on. Martin Luther King believed in peace and non-violent protests. Whereas individuals such as Malcolm X, saw it differently. Malcolm was not for peaceful protesting and marches but violence and retaliation. He believed it was right to express by any means necessary that they were no longer slaves and should be treated with equality and respect. In the past, other races were treated poorly because for their skin color as well. Take for example the Chinese and the Chinese exclusion act of 1882 in which prevented Chinese laborers from coming to America. Or the way the Jews were treated in the holocaust. Over the course of American history, racism has been exemplified in the schools and in the workplace. For example, in May of 1954 after the supreme court decision that ended segregation in schools was passed, nine high school African American students were chosen to be the first black high school students in central high school in little rock Arkansas. The students were faced with the anger of the whites, but were protected by the national guards. They were given a hard time because of the color of their skin.
While this issue is one that is very common to discuss it seemed most interesting to research. In my findings I found out how racism came about and how it has affected human interaction. In my opinion the idea that one race is more superior and or inferior to another is foolish. Martin Luther King stated in his speech “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” (Luther 1). I believe that one should not be judged based off their outer appearances but their actions and how they treat
