My brother and I both have learning disabilities from my father, trying to help us through schooling was tough because neither of my parents had the time to do extra reading or writing skills at home. My brother was in special education classes throughout high school and I was required to be in Title 1 during elementary school because my scores were so low. Not to mention the amount of money my parents had to put into for my mental health because I had constant anxiety about our living situation. All of these expenses add up and add stress to a family, eventually they start to despise each other because they don’t know what else to do. This is something a lot people in the middle class will just never understand how some parents blame their children for their poverty. My siblings and I never had a cell phone until after graduation, we were perfectly fine with it. Most of my clothing came from thrift stores and we would find special deals to help us. In Minnesota, we have this great program with the state issued insurance that would allow you to get glasses for a dollar. We only got to choose from about 20 frames, but at least we had glasses! We got my dog spade for free because a local veterinarian was giving discounts to low-income families, you just had to provide documentation. In high school, I was part of college preparatory program specifically for low-income families that actually paid me for taking initiative towards a better future. This program included trips that were completely free, I got to tour colleges across the US. The global economy needs to realize these types of programs can be lifesaving to the poor community.
