Race vs. Ethnicity. Race can be de defined as a group of persons related by common descent or hereditary. Ethnicity can be defined as an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, religion and language. Race and ethnicity have many similarities but also many differences, your race can sometimes narrow down your ethnicity and if you know what ethnicity you are, you definitely know your race. You can tell a person’s race just by their physical appearance, but ethnicity is so much more complex, you can see the color of a person’s skin but that does not really tell you much information of their ethnic background. This film clearly portrays the mistreatment of African Americans, and its shows a huge divide between Caucasians and African American’s, the Caucasians thought of being superior and African American’s thought to be inferior, the context of this movie gives you some insight on the cultural perspective of African American’s, it lets you see the traditions and customs and also, borrowed customs, the need for African American’s to wear wigs and straight hair to be more presentable to their white owners and the white owners learning about the African American’s way of cooking, adopting African American recipes. It is relevant because the tradition and customs used in the 1900’s are still used today. What we went through in the past still affects us today as a whole, we are still somewhat portrayed as inferior to the white man and although we strive to be equal there are still a lot of
