Rabies is a serious disease caused by a virus and mainly affects animals. This virus belongs to the Rhabdoviridae family -- it's a “bullet shaped virus”. The virus is transmitted through a bite for humans which affects the central nervous system. It travels within the nerves and brain and may multiply rapidly. In the beginning symptoms may not show until maybe weeks and months go by. Rabies may cause pain, fatigue, headaches, fever and irritability often followed by hallucinations,seizures and paralysis. More than 90 percent of rabies cases reported each year in the United States occur in wildlife: 36.5% raccoons, 23.5% skunks, 23.2% bats, 7% foxes and 1.8% other. Raccoons and Skunks are the common source of domestic animal rabies infection in the U.S. Rabies is a global health matter in which many human cases are underreported. Most rabies cases usually occur in countries with inadequate diagnostic facilities and surveillance systems. Exposure to rabid dogs is the cause for 90% of human exposures and over 99% of human deaths. In 2011, a 24 year old American soldier died of rabies after being bitten by a dog in Afghanistan. For laboratory workers and others who may have been exposed repeatedly, periodic testing for immunity is recommended and booster doses should also be given as needed. Anyone who has been bitten by an animal should clean the wound and see a doctor immediately. The doctor will then determine if the vaccination is needed.
