INTRODUCTION
Professional competence is the habitual and judicious use of communication, knowledge, technical skills, clinical reasoning, emotions, values, and reflection in daily practice for the benefit of the individual and community being served. (Epstein RM and Hundert EM, 2002). Medical practitioners and physicians are expected to always demonstrate professionalism in their workplace. Epstein and Hundert’s definition of professionalism gives us an insight into what professionalism is and also reveals the purpose of professionalism. In this essay, I discuss what professionalism means to me and how to be a role model for one’s profession.

Recognizing warning signs before a boundary crossing or violation occurs is of crucial importance to one’s profession. Be open to assessing one’s professional relationships and sharing one’s concerns with a colleague or supervisor.
Exhibit a high degree of emotional intelligence by considering the emotions and needs of others. Emotional intelligence is important for effective practice, especially when it come to delivering patient care. Emotional intelligence is the ability to stay proactive and not reactive in the face of a difficult situation. Letting a bad day impact how one relates with colleagues or patients can only lead to a negative outcome.
Patients are the reason we are healthcare professional. The patient is always the main priority. We must look beyond ourselves and ensure that the patient’s experience is satisfactory. It is important to listen and understand what a patient has to say and not put one’s personal needs ahead of his or her patient’s needs. Continuous alertness, self-evaluation and emphasis on the patient’s best interest helps protect the patient, one’s self and the
