What is the theory of representative bureaucracy?
- The notion that the public service should reflect the social composition of the population it serves
- Suggests that membership of the public service should represent the society it serves by reflecting the socio-demographic diversity of the general population
- Example, since women make up half the population, they should make up half the public service

Why is it important, according to you, that the demographic background of bureaucrats match the one of the broader population?

Why do we still want to work in the public service despite our many criticisms? Why do we take this class, if we don’t like the public service or if we don’t want to work in the public service?
- We also mention positives but because many of us work in the public service, we are aware of the many faults
- Many of us have first hand experience being “overpaid, underpaid, or not paid at all” from the phoenix pay system
- Also, many of us have experience or have heard about the issues with our department transferring into the new Canada.ca website and our data and content pages being lost
- Many of us don’t take public administration to work in the public service, rather, as a path towards graduate studies or non-governmental work that involves knowledge of how government works
- For example, some students want to become politicians or work in NGOs. At the same time, some students see public administration as a path to law school in which public administration can be seen as an advantageous
