The Queen Mab speech is a one of the most famous speeches in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The Queen Mab speech is about a little fairy who supposedly visits one while one’s are sleeping. In the first half of the speech Mercutio characterizes Queen Mab and one can now create a picture in one's head of what she looks like. Shakespeare included the speech in the play because it provides comic relief as well as the speech has many literary devices in it. For example, on line 69 Shakespeare wrote, “Her wagoner a small grey-coated gnat,” that is personification because a gnat can not wear a coat. The purpose of the literary device is to bring the story alive so one can get a sense of what Queen Mab looks like and the team that she travels with.
