Portrait of Queen Elizabeth 1

A1: Queen Elizabeth 1 stands proud on the globe like she has conquered the world. On the background there is sunshine on her right hand, but darkness and lightning on her left. Each side has what appears to be descriptive words for each side, however, I am unable to make out or understand the meaning. I see this as an indication that there are two sides to her personality, a bright side and a dark side. Her dress is fully adorned with what appears to be pearl, ruby, and onyx gems. The style of dress is with the overly puffed sleeves and the rather over sized bottom half are common stylistic features of the Renaissance period.

A2: The contrast between the dark side of her left and the bright sunshine side on her right is interesting. When the artist painted this portrait, what was the reason or meaning this was to represent? Why is the dark on her left side and the brightness on her right. Is there some mystical meaning behind this where she is taking the world out of darkness and into the light? And what is that on her back? Is it a heart or supposed to represent angels wings? Does this have any reference to the background?

People believed Elizabeth I couldn't rule because religion caused them to have bias towards male rulers only. Some people were supportive of her because she didn't have absolute power. At the time that this speech was given, Mary Queen of Scots had been beheaded and due to this, England was about to go at war. Many of the citizens didn’t approve of Queen Elizabeth becoming queen because they saw her as an “illegitimate daughter.” Although many citizens were ecstatic with the fact that she had became queen, she needed as many people as possible to support her since they were going at war to fight for her and her country. In her speech, she talks about how she wants them to fight rather than cower in fear beneath their enemy.…
