Additives are incredibly unhealthy and add many extra calories that are unnecessary. People are so used to eating foods containing these additives that if they were to taste the same exact food without them, they would think it is disgusting. A few decades ago, “cyclamate, in artificial sweeteners was banned by the FDA in the 1970s after researchers found it was causing cancer” (Kaplan). Pure white sugar is always available at restaurants, along with the artificial sweeteners. Even though the white sugar has calories, it is worth the extra calories rather than risking getting cancer and dying. Additionally, the majority of people, especially those living in urban areas, consume an abundance of meat, vegetable oils, dairy products, tobacco, drugs, alcohol and sugary foods (“How Common Foods Contribute to Incurable Diseases”). These foods contain some of poorest nutrients and are the main reasons why Americans pack on extra pounds. Letting the body expand past its normal size can create an enormous amount of problems, causing the organs to have to work tremendously harder than before to keep the body functioning correctly. The majority of the time, the reason this occurs is because of a lack of responsibility within the individual. Ludwig directs a program at the Children’s Hospital in Boston and he concluded that the childhood obesity epidemic occurs in three phases. The first phase is when child obesity became known, but the public health effects weren’t a big deal yet. Phase two are the problems happening right now, as more serious diseases are occurring, such as type two diabetes in children. Phase three has not quite been established yet, but Ludwig predicts it is on its way (DeNoon). The epidemic is rising and who knows where the problem will be some day.
