Perseverance is “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition” (perseverance, 2017) This quality is one a leader needs to have to succeed because not everything for them will come easy and they will face struggles but to be a leader you need to be able to power through them and continue to lead your people to greatness. If a leader is not perseverant than the people they are leading will surely fail and will not be able to progress and move forward with the task at hand. Washington was perseverant from a very young age when he had to drop out of school and self-teach himself. (George Washington, 2012). Washington had to teach himself many things such as how to read, write, and many other school subjects. This posed many challenges for Washington growing up but he showed through his perseverance that if you try hard enough at anything you can make something of yourself. Washington took this perseverance with him through the rest of his life and it would become a useful asset as a general in war. Having the odds stacked against him and the American people with the British having a much stronger and bigger army he needed to have perseverance to get through this. Washington’s men also were able to feed off of Washington’s perseverance and become perseverant themselves, and this is what a great leader is able to do; instill his traits into his men to the point where they have them themselves. America’s independence when it comes down to it could be attributed to George Washington’s perseverance. His perseverance didn’t just stop at gaining America’s independence he used it all throughout his presidency. Washington showed it through all of his decision making as president and through all the struggles of making a new country and setting it up to be a great one. He was perseverant enough to convince the American
