Confucius, also known as Kong Qui or K’ung Fu-tzu, was an prestigious and powerful Chinese teacher, editor, politician, and philosopher known for his popular aphorisms and models of social interaction. He was born on September 28, 551 B.C, lived in Ancient China during the Zhou Dynasty, and died in 479 B.C. Being a government official, during his lifetime he saw failure and chaos in China. Due to all of this commotion and misconduct he saw, he decided to form a new moral code, called Confucianism, based on kindness, respect, strong family bonds, honesty, and education. When asked about government Confucius replied in his Analects by saying “Go before the people with your example, and be laborious in their affairs.” Confucius envisioned a government that returned to old customs and tradition. Confucius put a lot of value in the traditions of the past dynasties. Self-governing is suggested in these traditions, along with the moderation of self-control. He also states that a disconnect from society is harmony. However, he goes along to say that it is important for people to know their place in society and fulfill their job to the best they can. Also in his Analects he says “the requisites of government are there be sufficiency of food, sufficiency of military equipment, and the confidence of people in their ruler.” Confucius believed that government was used as a tool to bring out the best in people. He says that for the well being of the society that the people can not forget their roles. Government was to be looked upon as for leadership, and respected by the people.
