Pursuing Social Work Essay

Pursuing the profession of social work, I am aware that there are many values I will learn. I understand that my personal opinions should get put aside for professional ones. This means anything I personally believe is wrong or inferior, such as a different race, loving a person of the same sex, having a different religion, abortion, or any other values and ideas. As pursue my career as a social worker, I will be asked to put aside many personal values in order to treat the client with whom I am working with. It is my understanding that this can be one of the hardest parts of being a social worker, as my own personal values which are an important part of my personal self is set aside. During attachment, a strong bond is being developed which is important in a child’s development. As a social worker, I understand that attachment vary and differs between cultures. There are many issues that can affect attachment such as trauma, immigration or illness. Trauma can affect attachment if after the trauma occurs the ones involves experience flashbacks. Flashback makes the trauma a reoccurring event in one’s life and until it is treated can affect attachment. Immigration affects trauma if the primary caregiver immigration status cause them to be deported. An infant or toddler will not only experience the trauma of losing their primary caregiver but have to develop new attachment with the secondary caregiver who will soon become the primary caregiver. Illness which can lead to death also affects attachment, while in the womb the infant bonds or grows an attachment to its mother. There are instants where the mother dies during birth which can affect attachment. Conception can influence the attachment process of the mother experiences trauma during conception. One of the many example of trauma during conception is rape. If one is raped and conception occurs some mothers are unable to develop the needed bond with their unborn
