When it comes to religion, Puritans had a strong belief that God directed all things of his will and intelligence. Religion was the most important thing to Puritans. Their thoughts on hell was more of disgust and intolerable, while now we view hell and heaven as much more sacred places. They believed God already knew who was going to heaven and hell, but the people still had no clue, so they had to do their good each day living. In the “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, Jonathan Edwards shows imagery of what they believe in when it comes to God. “There is no want of the power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment. Men’s hands cannot be strong when God rises up. The strongest have no power to resist Him, not can any deliver out of His hands.” (Edwards, 430). Edwards is describing God to be the most powerful creature of mankind. In the article “Still Puritan after All These Years”, there were multiple experiments between nowadays cultures whose values are significantly different. While some cultures believed in one thing the others believed in something vastly different. It was not in terms of their religious beliefs though. “In none of these studies did the results hinge on the participants’ religious affiliation or level of religious feeling. Whatever these Americans explicitly believed (or didn’t believe) about God, something like Puritan values seemed to be guiding their moral judgements.” (Hutson) This quote is saying, what we believe about in God doesn’t lead us to the decisions we are making in our life, but are guided by those thoughts Puritans gave us while thinking in terms of our moral judgements. Today, there isn’t as much decision making based off of religion. We still have our values and beliefs, but we don’t go rule by rule of what the book says. Puritans studied mostly the Old Testament. They were guided by rules presented in the book and did nothing
