Pulpless teeth frequently present unique restorative problems due to their mutilation by caries, fractures, previous restorative procedures, and endodontic access. Among the numerous restorative techniques for pulpless teeth that have been suggested in the literature, variations of the dowel-core restoration have been receiving considerable attention.1
Various methods of restoring pulpless teeth have been reported for more than 200 years.2 In 1728, Pierre Fauchard described the use of “tenons”, which were metal posts in the roots of teeth to retain prostheses. In 1746, Claude Mouton published his design of a gold crown with a gold post that was to be inserted into the root canal.3
