As I grew up in a first generation immigrant family, I did not have the guidance towards a higher education because both of my parents did not have the opportunity. My parents would tell me to go to school because it was the main reason they left the comfort of their home’s in Mexico. But they did not know that there is a process, requirements, and tuition to be paid in order to attend. Therefore, as I strive to accomplish to earn my bachelor’s in architecture I relentlessly help friends and classmates in need of guidance with their educational goals with the knowledge that I have obtained from the Puente program, because I personally know how frightening it can be to pursue higher education not having relatives who are there to help.
When I enrolled in DVC, I enrolled in the Puente program, where students like me had similar backgrounds and mentors who were passionate to see me accomplish my educational goals. Before joining Puente, I was unaware of the requirements and resources on campus. But after completing my first year as a Puente student, I learned how to utilize my resources at DVC, which granted me the …show more content…

In the club, I have been honored to help other students pursue their educational goals by organizing firm and college tours, and workshops that assist them to learn about the fields and future college opportunities. One workshop in particular that I organized in November 2016 focused on guiding peers to start their UC application and answer any questions they had in the process. It was rewarding to see a large group of students passionate and excited about transferring. Being part of the Puente program and ACE club has been a privilege because they have empowered me to become a leader who is not only determined to achieve my educational goals but one who willingly helps others meet their
