Psychotherapy is used to treat mental health conditions and emotional problems by allowing the patient to look deeper into their worries, troublesome habits, or problems. In the UK, psychotherapeutic services involve talking with a trained therapist on a one-on-one basis or in a group, however, other methods, such as movement, drama, music, and art are used. There are different types of psychotherapy offered in the UK and they include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered approach, and systemic approach. Therapists also use eHealth to treat and provide interventions to clients. Such approach takes place through mobile device apps, Internet, and telephone.

However, CBT is the most commonly preferred version of psychotherapy in the public sector in the UK since it seeks to change the behavior and thinking patterns of the individual. CBT deals with the problem based on the patient’s current thoughts and behaviors and recognize the events in one’s past that shaped the individual’s current behavior. As such, CBT seeks to provide solutions on how one can change their current behavior and thoughts to function better at the moment and in the future.
A patient presented with a ten-year history of food anxiety accompanied by the fear of being sick can be treated using CBT or psychodynamic psychotherapy. The patient admits to being anxious whenever around peers during meal time and thus prefers to carefully plan when, where, and what he is going to eat. He also discloses to vomiting several times a week. Upon close examination, the patient explains that his family has had conflict around meal times since he was young.
