Psychosocial theory has had a profound impact on Social Work, introducing the consideration of the individual and their environment within the same context (Hollis, 1958). Previous research considered the “internal” and “external” effects upon individuals separately, although Turner argued “people are to be understood as products of the interaction among their biogenetic endowment, the effect of significant relationships, the impact of life experiences and their participation in societal, cultural and current events” (1978:2). This approach is of importance to the case study analysed in this assignment which discusses Rory, a fifteen-year-old boy who shares a home with his Mother, Stepfather and younger brother. Professionals must consider the diversity of the group and the consequences of this; “diversity is appreciated and expected because the developmental system will vary across individuals and groups. There is no pre-determined course of development” (Vimont, 2012:505). It is important to consider psychosocial theory when undertaking group intervention to ensure that all individuals are accessing support which is appropriate to them in terms of their social environment and life experiences (Hutchinson, 2011:365). Considering Rory’s social environment, a ‘task group’ would be the most suitable for his developmental and emotional needs. In task group interventions, the professional’s role is moderated, focusing on maintenance of the group and allowing participants to work without explicit supervision. This role would include initiating or supporting group discussion, allowing participants to formulate their own ideas and hypotheses, encouraging all individuals to participate honestly and respectfully, supporting the creation of bonds between participants and evaluating the session constructively (Hutchinson, 2011:365).
