Introduction: Building a psychological profile for a violent criminal is usually not the first step taken in trying to apprehend an unknown offender. Why this tool can be used for mild or one time violent offenders, it is most useful to use with serial killers. This process is actually viewed more as a tool to be used in conjunction with other methods, once traditional investigative tools have failed to produce results. This process is used in order to determine what sort of offender an investigator might be looking for. It is not a perfect science and has some methodological flaws, such as when a killer does not follow a pattern. However, most serial killers can be categorized and will follow the conventions of their category without realizing it. It is because of this that behavioral/psychological profiling can be used to aid in the capture of a violent offender.
