Williams James wrote in 1892 that most of the choices we make each day may feel like products of well-considered decision making but they’re not. They are actually habits. Habits can be as simple as how we order our meals, how often we exercise or even what we say to our children each night. It is essential to understand how our brain stores different functions, how habits emerge and how the Habit Loop works within our brain.
First, it is important to know how the brain stores different functions. The human brain is similar to an onion. The brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort. Therefore, our brain makes almost any routine into a habit. First step, the brain spends a lot of effort at the beginning of a habit looking for something, a cue, that offers a hint as to which pattern to use. Second the brain stores this pattern as a routine. The third step happens at the end of each activity when the reward occurs. This is when the brain stores it as a routine. Once the brain recognizes all three -step loops it becomes an automatic habit. Third, The Habit Loop is important to understand because it reveals the truth about how habit emerges and why habits can become very powerful and hard to break. When the brain stops fully participating in decision making and it stops working so hard it diverts focus to another task. Unless the person purposely wants to change a habit they must find a new pattern routine. Not understanding how habits are method and the partner the brain has stored will always unfold
