Although I served as a research mentor to a few students this semester, the majority of my service came in other forms. I attempted to be a well-rounded scholar by engaging in national, university, community, college, and departmental levels of service. For instance, I serve as a reviewer for the Journal of Negro Education, which is national service to the fields of education and psychology. At the university level, I am a member of the Travel subcommittee for the Professional Development Committee (PDC). This is the end of my PDC term; however, I consistently advocated for my department and encouraged psychology faculty to apply for PDC funds. As a result, seven out of nine psychology faculty members received/will receive travel, research, …show more content…
These committees resulted in multiple on-campus meetings in Coltrane Hall and at the Anderson Center. Finally, my departmental level service consists of three main components. First, I serve as the main departmental representative to the PDC committee. Second, I was a member of the Department of Psychological Sciences’ search committee. Third, I serve as the primary advisor for our chapter of Psi Chi. Each of these departmental service commitments resulted in multiple meetings, document reviews, and planning. However, I believe my role as Psi Chi advisor has been the most rewarding. While planning for the Psi Chi Induction ceremony, where we inducted 15 scholars, I also planned to honor our graduating seniors with awards for service, academics, research, and most improved scholar. This took a lot of strategic planning as faculty members had to vote for students to receive these awards. The voting was done electronically via Google Forms, which was not only convenient, but allowed faculty members to vote privately. In addition to managing the voting process, I created framed certificates for each winner. Currently, Psi Chi members are using Google Docs to electronically vote for their 2018-2019 executive …show more content…
As an educational psychologist, it was my hope to enhance my relationship with the Department of Education at WSSU. In addition, by serving students as a mentor and as Psi Chi advisor, I am able to help foster their identities and reward them for their exceptional practices. Next year, I hope to focus my service activities on the FYE planning committee and Psi Chi. In addition, I will continue to review for the Journal of Negro Education and my involvement with SQIP. Finally, I attended all departmental faculty meetings and events, including our Psi Chi induction ceremony and all Psi Chi events, Scholarship Day Symposium, all Psychology Colloquia, the Majors’ Meeting and one or two Psychology Club events. At the University level, I attended the scholarship day poster session, Founders’ Day, and several general faculty meetings. I plan to continue to attend these events during my time at Winston-Salem State

All students deserve a quality education regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, and/or zip code. In 1903, W.E.B. Dubois supported the idea of the “Talented Tenth,” articulating that advancement for black people would ultimately be possible through the attainment of a rigorous education by a few. Mays was the youngest out of eight children to two sharecroppers in the small town of Rambo, South Carolina. He always possessed a keen passion as to what he wanted to do in life and the first thing on his checklist was to receive a formal education, which would allow him to achieve certain “luxuries” that the educated would qualify for. During that time period a formal education for a child of sharecropper was extremely rare, but male African American was an even scarcer oddity in itself. Dr. Mays graduated from South Carolina State College at Orangeburg as the valedictorian in 1916 while only attending school one-third of the year. Although, Dr. Mays graduated valedictorian, his educational palette was still thirsty for knowledge.…

Besides the severe inequalities in education systems and the disadvantages of African Americans left by history, another significant cause of the African American education gap is the anti-intellectualism mindset that prevails among African American communities. This ideological issue is the Elephant in the Room; while few people have even realized its existence, it is discouraging African American students from pursuing academic excellence to a great extent. One outstanding African American educator, John H. McWhorter, illustrates the anti-intellectualist peer pressure that many African American students would have to face in a personal anecdote: when McWhorter was little, a group of African American children asked him to spell “concrete”.…

The pragmatic-positivistic phase is to provide students with all the skills needed to bring about change in their communities. If all these components are implemented then there will be changes within black and white communities because these students are taking what they learned and bringing it back to help heal the racist American society. The department of African studies should work frivolously to educate its students and possibly “bring about a kind of black renaissance; they could possibly wield an impact on the entire cemetery of American Education” (Hare (1), 15). Hare believes that African American studies is based on the ideology of evolutionary nationalism, not racism, but it is dedicated to the destruction of white…

According to the U.S Census, there are around 655,000 current African American high school seniors. Yet, when reading the statistics of the Ron Brown scholarship applicant pool, there were only 4,000 students who applied. These 4,000 merely makeup .006 percent of the black seniors in this country, and they shine a light on an area that the Ron Brown Scholar program needs to address. Today, the modern education system is tainted with bureaucratic and oligarchical tendencies that prevents students of color, and low socioeconomic backgrounds from excelling in this highly competitive field.…

Like every child, I went through the ubiquitous “why” stage where I posed this question even to the smallest, most mundane events of life. Filled with genuine curiosity and fascination, I desired to understand the ornate workings of the world.
