In our curriculum we have focussed on the four Cardinal Virtues that are in correspondence with our morals ; prudence, fortitude, justice, and temperance. In a brief overview, temperance is the idea of self-restraint and moderation to suppress our greed and desire. Prudence is the ability to judge right and wrong in any situation. Justice is the the constant and permanent determination to give everyone his or her rightful due. Finally, fortitude allows us to overcome fear and to remain steady in our will in the face of obstacles however it is always reasoned and reasonable.

Fortitude can be found in the character’s ability to remain determined to achieve their goal in the face of persecution and physical harm, they do not back away from the injustice because of fear, they overcome adversity. In specific, Donald sacrifices his financial benefits and luxurious lifestyle in efforts to liberate the oppressed community of South Africa. Furthermore, justice is exhibited as the underlying theme of the entire film, to provide the native African people with equal opportunity and to bring the oppressive government to justice.
For context, the time in which this story took place (70’s-80’s) a great injustice was taking place in terms of racial discrimination in the world, in this scenario-South Africa. A white minority governs the millions of African people in a violent and supremacist fashion, stripping general rights and labeling the majority of the population as inferior beings. In consequence for his disobedience Biko was banished from the community, however he continued to work in secret to put South Africa in the world’s spotlight and bring attention to the cause. Simultaneously, Biko demonstrates fortitude, justice, and prudence throughout his hopeful campaign, especially when he stands in front of thousands motivating them towards a common goal whilst in the public view of the government, he became a vessel of hope for his people.
