This drug is widely known as Prozac, an antidepressant to aid in the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, and panic disorders. Businesses saw Prozac as an opportunity to market this drug because it was the first of its kind. Prozac falls into a category known as SSRI, which stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. This drug limits the reabsorption of serotonin through neurotransmitters in the brain, which leads to the potential balance of a patient's mood. What makes this drug more advanced than other antidepressants is that there are less severe side effects. This became attractive to patients who have tried other forms of antidepressants, but experienced extreme adverse reactions. Letterman mentioned Prozac on his show, but there were celebrities who actually admitted to the use of antidepressants; Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Terry Bradshaw, John Hamm, Ashley Judd, and many more. Social Magazines showcased beautiful models Christie Brinkley, Jennifer Aniston, and others on their covers while the name Prozac was somewhere in the subtext. New ways of getting the name Prozac into the airwaves was overwhelming, but when it was thought that every outlet had been covered the first commercial for pharmaceuticals hit television sets.
