Protests Are Good For Democracy

I think that these protests are good for democracy because they are bringing awareness to the world and showing that everyone has the right to stand up for what they believe in. A piece of evidence I would use to support this idea is from the pro side about how protests are forcing all of us to face racial injustices. The pro side of the article by Tom Wendell, states that Kaepernick isn’t the only one who has raised his voice; other athletes have also took a stand for racial inequality. This is important because it shows that just like Kaepernick there are other people who don’t agree with the way America has been dealing with problems and therefore, they shouldn’t go along with the beliefs of others. On the other side there is the con article

Civil Disobedience Speech Notes Civil disobedience in a democracy is not morally justified. I have one definition to give. Civil Disobedience- an act against a certain law with no violence One thing that comes with civil disobedience is change. But, if one person can create change that gives them more power than others. The future of our nation and our democracy depends upon the next generation of electorates. In the ABC documentary An Uneducated Electorate Promotes Democracy's Demise by John Stossel, Richard Dreyfus discusses how uninformed, apathetic, and uninterested electorates will ultimately lead to the demise of the United States’ form of democracy. Moreover, the fault also lies in current cable shows that misinform the majority of impressionable and easily manipulated electorates. As the foundation of our government lies within the citizens, an incognizant electorate will jeopardize and threaten our democracy. Education plays a part in the foundation of democracy.…

I oppose Kaepernick’s actions because I think no matter what it is you are in america, you should show some respect toward this United Nation. You choose to be here, did you not? If you’re going to be here, you ought to respect everything including the national anthem. Living in America is a right not a privilege. If you don’t respect our flag, national anthem or anything else, do not expect it from us in your own country……

Laws are placed to keep us, the people, safe. We even put people out there to regulate those laws, and to offer punishment to those who don't follow them. When people resist laws it puts the lawmakers in a bad place. People who are boycotting the laws because they don't want to support what goes against their values. You can't please everyone and keep everyone safe.…

In my opinion, Civil Disobedience has a positive long-term effect in American society. “Civil disobedience is a public, non-violent and conscientious infringement of law carried out to express opposition to law and policy” (Smith p.826). In 2015, after a mass shooting at an African American church in South Carolina, a young woman climbed up a flag pole and snatched a Confederate flag. The woman was arrested and it sparked a lot of outrage in the African American community, a lot of peaceful protesting happened around South Carolina, a few days later. The woman was freed and the state government announced that they will be removing every Confederate flag in South Carolina.…

The right of peaceable assembly and petition was first declared in what would become the United States in the eighth resolve of the Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress of 1774. But, its importance reaches much further back. The Magna Carta and the fifth right of the English Bill of Rights of 1689 both protected the right of petition against the government. Stretching throughout time and space, the necessity to allow for peaceful resistance has been upheld. Civil Disobedience is an indispensable function of an advancing free society.…

In a time where America is undergoing so much transition to a new presidency, we are witnessing a substantial increase in civil disobedience to the new laws and sanctions being put in place by the new president. While there have been some outburst of unnecessary violence and unrest, most of the resistance has been peaceful in nature. The question we have to ask ourselves is whether peacefully protest laws we see unjust beneficial to our society and the manner in which we govern it. I affirm that peaceful protest is beneficial to those who want to refute a law that they do not agree with. I beleive movements like the March for Life and other peaceful protests are very powerful and speak volumes of what the people want.…

Protesting in America has gone way out of hand in todays world. Not only is the action happening way to much, but is happening in ways you may see to be inappropriate. For example today in current events is NFL players kneeling for the national anthem. Protesting is a great way of communicating a problem, but it must be done the right way. Kneeling is just simply disrespectful to our country and to the soldiers who are fighting for us that we may have that freedom.…

One issue that resonates the need for civil disobedience to me is the DACA/DREAM Act. Under the shadow of the Trump Administration, the DREAM Act, and the DREAMers it would protect, are in an ambiguous state, which could result in potential deportation of DREAMers if action by Congress isn’t taken soon. Being an immigrant myself and having perspective on the actual difficulty of immigrating legally to this country, I have a lot of sympathy for those who would be negatively impacted by a lack of passage of a DREAM Act (and the rescission of DACA). Over the coming months, the legal status of those originally protected by DACA will expire. I feel very passionately about this topic and would most certainly participate in civil disobedience if no…

At the very basic level, a democratic structure can be defined as an ‘institutional arrangement for arriving at political decisions in which individuals acquire the power to decide by means of a competitive struggle for the people’s vote’ (Schumpeter 1942 cited in Menocal 2007). The positive relationship between prosperity and democracy has an enduring relationship in the subject of social sciences. Although there does exist a strong correlation, it does not necessarily mean causation.…
