A strike is a work stoppage caused by employees’ refusal to work, typically to protest an employer decision. Some reasons that employees may choose to strike is if their employer chooses to close a plant, freeze wages, cut benefits, impose unpopular work rules, or refuse to improve working conditions. The right to strike is protected by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), but not all strikes are legal. Employees who strike for a lawful object fall into two classes “economic strikers” and “unfair labor practice strikers.” Both classes are considered employees, but unfair labor practice strikers have greater rights of reinstatement to their jobs.
