With a growing number of schools are doing what public urging, abandoning test attracts a lot of enthusias all over the world. Even the country, which always implements exam-oriented education, China is no exception. In 2007, a Test Forbidding Crisis had swept Chengdu, Sichuan to stop the increasing burdens from testing. The former governor of Chengdu announced, “Developing education is the root of development to the country rich and people strong, whereas, exam-oriented education’s pressure breached this principle.” Although that revolution failed, it did report on Chinese developing direction and alerted people the failure of formalistic test.…
Schools in the United States use standardized tests to evaluate the students' in elementary, middle and high school. These tests are also used for entrance into college or even to find out if a student needs to take a particular class over in college. To enter into college, a student usually will take the SAT or the ACT Exams and usually there is a fee for taking these exams. In Indiana, the students' take the ISTEP + Exam.…
If a teacher does not wish to be reprimanded, his or her students will all have to do well on the tests. In order to be sure that this happens, teachers will teach to the tests. They will focus not on creative writing, but rather on the type of writing that the test scorers will want to see. Instead of taking field trips, students will be practicing analogies and test taking skills. Literature will not be read intensively, but will instead be skimmed for the main points in order to answer the critical reading questions.…
Standardized testing is often scrutinized by teachers instead of being looked at in a positive manner. There are many ways to utilize such a test. The best possible way would be to teach to the test. It not only benefits the original reason standardized tests are in place, it also provides a backbone for what to teach. It allows you to stay within professional boundaries and also allows the teacher to teach to their liking with what material is provided.…
Standardized testing is very significant in our day and age. To get into a good university they at least want you to have a twenty four, and just for having a twenty four you might have to take extra courses just because it still was not high enough. Why do colleges want scores so high? Why can't a student be based on the grades they have made in high school and not just on a single test? What is even the purpose for the ACT and SAT, students stress over these tests knowing that they have to get a certain score.…
Sumira Patel Period:1 Standardized Testing Are our lives are seriously being determined by stress filled tests that require hours of bubbling circles? According to the Washington Post, students spend an average of 60 to 110 hours preparing for standardized tests, instead of learning in class. These tests are pointless because they are used to compare our intelligence with the rest of the world’s intelligence and rarely show the true skills of students. In reality, many kids do not even put forth any effort in answering questions accurately.…
Standardized Testing Does Not Accurately Represent Educational Quality Standardized tests are tests that are administered by the state and are graded in a consistent or “standard” manner. They are administered in hopes to measure a student's aptitude by assessing how well a student understands a collection of curriculum that the government deems is necessary for all high school students to understand. These tests are administered all across America. Tests such as the ACT and SAT are highly considered by colleges and universities in hopes to increase competition and ensure that only people who are “qualified” are allowed admittance to the school. Standardized tests are, in theory, necessary and beneficial to teachers and students…
Our education system relies too heavily on standardized testing, from graduating high school or entering college. However, many people “do not understand the mechanisms that stack cards against so many children” (Harkins). When socioeconomic status and race become critical factors in achieving success on standardized tests, it disadvantages those already disadvantaged. Groups like the NAACP and National Urban League are fighting to bring the end of these tests in the name of equality, and are bringing much needed attention to this issue (Krishna). Education demands metrics gauging student progress, yet the data yielded by standardized tests is not an honest representation.…
Ticket scalping has been around for many years and is defined as ‘an unsanctioned ticket investor who purchases tickets to an event and resells them at raised prices.’ The action to ‘scalp’ has been referenced as early as 1869 in American English to theater tickets but mostly to that of the 19th century referencing railway tickets. A scalper was a common utterance for “con man or cheater” in the late 19th century. (Scalper) The second-hand market grew exponentially as opportunists realized they could sell tickets at a higher price.…
Lelac Almagor, author of “The Good in Standardized Testing” says, “Without standardized testing—and lacking any other basis for comparison in their own educational experience—the students’ families had no way of knowing what [Almagor] had assumed was obvious: that eighth graders... on the other side of town were well past working on multisyllabic words or improper fractions. They had no way of knowing that their hard-working, solid-GPA kids were already far behind.” Almagor’s writing shows how standardized testing can actually be helpful to several families to show them how their child is doing in school. While this may be the case, standardized testing still creates more inconveniences for students, teachers, and parents. If the tests take up too much time, create “winners” and “losers”, but don’t support the student’s education, are standardized tests even worth their trouble?…
Throughout the United States today, standardized testing stands as an assessment that every child dreads beginning at the third grade and continuing until they are seniors in high school. Nonetheless, what does this test bring for those students? Does it bring unlimited wealth, a respectable future, a hidden treasure? Unfortunately, standardized testing does not bring any of those items, however, it does show teachers what their students are both succeeding in and failing at. When it comes to standardized testing for myself, I am not an enthusiast of it, which is why I have carefully chosen this topic to acquire an additional understanding on why it is required for all students.…
In 2001, the government passed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) in an effort reaching 100% proficiency of all groups of students in America by the year 2014. As per the act’s mandate, standardized tests are administered as the mechanism to measure the performance of the students, teachers and the schools. The primary purpose of these tests was to raise teachers’ accountability and improve students’ achievement. This raises an important question: Is standardized testing the greatest medium to accomplish these goals? The fairness and the reliability of the standardized tests is questionable.…
As important as standardized testing is for education, it is still fundamentally flawed. Programs once promoting education reform have now created all-or-nothing gambles for schools. Teachers, schools, and school funding are all at risk because of flawed and sometimes inaccurate tests. This has also brought larger issues to the public’s attention. I am opposed to schools using standardized tests because of government interference and the tests being rigid and inflexible.…
Jay Archibald ELA 9 Mrs. Macey 21 December 2016 Jay Archibald: standardized tests Do you think there should be standardized tests taken in school? School officials are debating if there should still be standardized tests in the educational process across America. For years now, America has made a computer based test that students take in school on the subjects they are learning. They have used these tests to show achievements and our progress in education for the students and the teachers.…
Controversy over standardized testing sprang up as America’s ranking in education in the world’s system began to falter. The failure of education has been blamed on the increase in usage of standardized tests. This has brought up the issue whether schools should continue the usage of standardized testing because America’s diminishing education is linked to over testing. Although standardized testing has been around for quite some time with significantly increased test scores, the repercussions of continually testing students has degraded students’ abilities of real world application with rudimentary preparations. As students are being continuously tested teachers are obligated to teach students the test.…
