Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power Plants

Improved Essays
After researching benefits and downfalls of nuclear power plants, I have come to a conclusion that we should block the plan to build a nuclear power plant in Enola, Pennsylvania. While researching nuclear power plants, I found more disadvantages than advantages. Many power plants have one event that causes another event, and another, each event a product of the one before, and a cause of the one after. This is called a chain reaction. Nuclear power plants are power plants that use Uranium 235 that undergo fission, to release the energy inside the nucleus of an atom. Fission is the process of separating the nucleus of an atom. Once one atom is split, it creates a chain reaction that makes most of the other atoms split. This makes the Uranium …show more content…
For instance, it takes lots of money to construct and buy proper equipment to contain radiation in the power plant, and throughout the procedures. At nuclear power plants, the Uranium releases radiation that must be contained in the core. The equipment used to contain the radiation can only be used for a limited amount of time before it has to be replaced for safety reasons. Each time it needs to be replaced, there is a new cost to replace it. This material that is being replaced can also not be used for anything else, or recycled because it has been exposed to radiation, and is radioactive. This is called half life. Half life is the time taken for radioactive material to fall to half of it’s original value. The half life of radioactive materials could be from 200-500 thousand years. The Uranium 235 also it expensive to mine and transport to power plants. Health risks that can arise from nuclear power plants would be times such as when radiation is released out of the power plant. This could happen as the result of a meltdown (when the Uranium 235 melts through the core). When exposed to radiation, it highers possibilities of different types of cancer. It can also pollute water supplies so that they cannot be used for hundreds of …show more content…
For instance, someone supporting the building of the power plant may include the fact that they do not emit pollution to the environment, or are a source of zero emission energy. While this is true, and they only emit steam, they do leave us with lots of radioactive material that has to be properly stored, and will never have any other uses. They also may say that the power plant would create jobs, but so would any other type of usage for the area they are using to build the power plant. A good thing about nuclear energy is that it is very efficient and inexpensive. Nuclear power plants use Uranium 235 to produce electricity, and Uranium 235 is not a renewable resource. Although a nuclear power plant would be efficient now, once we run out of u235, there would be no use for the powerplant. Why would we invest money in something that is only going to work for a limited time? Instead, we should invest in a renewable source of energy, such as wind turbines, solar panels, or dams in

It began with having a lot going on that has involved weapons made out of nuclear fission and probably makes you think if you think if nuclear fission has harmed society. There many examples what good it’s done for us and many harm that it caused. It has allowed us to use it for greater things but also taken advantage of by using it for weapons of destruction. They’ve already used one on people already and killed many. That is not the way using nuclear fission, they use it for threats, power, and their own purposes.…

Nuclear energy is the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion. Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously or on impact with another particle, with the release of energy. Nuclear fusion on the contrary is the exact opposite; it gathers energy from the heavy nucleus combining with the shot particle. These two combined produce a lot of energy that is used all over the world on a daily basis. Nuclear power has proved to serve a huge part of our society today.…

“I'm not trying to be pro-nuclear, I'm just pro-arithmetic” said David MacKay, while trying to explain that this was the only option at this point whether anyone liked it or not. The United States is on their toes trying to figure out the best routes to go to create energy: solar and wind, coal, or nuclear. Solar and wind are found to soon die out and have nothing left to support the United States. Coal is a resource which we are running low on and soon will not be able to find, then we have nuclear which can solve most of our problems without running out. The United States should use nuclear energy, because we can recycle warheads into energy, lower the amount of waste we create, and become more efficient.…

I personally think that we should not have nuclear bombs in today's citie. There are many problems with Nuclear bombs one of them is if someone dangerous decides to use them. What if Kim Jong Un is a unstable sociopath. If he had decided to detonate some of his bombs on America like he has threatened to on multiple occasions. Another situation would be if terrorists got their hands on a nuke.…

This contrasts to coal fired units which emit copious amounts of substances that aren’t immediately deadly, and didn’t require immediate attention when they were first created thus leading to the environmental state we’re currently in. even though it’s true that nuclear fallout can be a serious problem, many reactors have several containment precautions. Even the incident at Three Mile Island which scared a nation into halting production of nuclear energy was mostly contained, and there have been no identifiable negative health effects [9]. Even considering the amount of current deaths because of both nuclear and fossil fuels, studies show that the amount of energy being produced by nuclear power instead of fossil fuels has actually saved tens of thousands of lives. The study estimated that for each terawatt hour of electricity produced, an average of 26.67 lives are lost whereas a terawatt hour of nuclear electricity kills an average of 0.074 people (stats relevant for Europe)…

The use of nuclear power has been under debate for many years; with issues such as environmental impact, safety, cost, waste management, and efficiency, the cons clearly outweigh the pros. Nuclear power plants have been supplying electricity to the population for nearly 60 years, but all things must come to an end as better options emerge and humanity develops as a species. It 's only natural for things to become outdated, or be replaced by better options as they become available. Nuclear power is a source of energy, created through a reaction when a uranium atom is split, releasing heat that is used to produce electricity. It was initially used as an alternative to coal, as coal-burning facilities were becoming a hazard to the environment.…
