In North America, marriages are usually by free choice, however what people should realize is that the majority of marriages are arranged in the world. Marriage is a formal union, a social and legal contract between two individuals that unites their lives legally, economically, and emotionally. In 2011, 46% of the population aged 15 and over was legally married, while 53% was unmarried. That 53% includes divorces, separations and widowed. But 30 years later, in 1981, 60% of the population aged 15 and over was married, while 39% was remaining single.
