Pros And Cons Of Keeping Exotic Animals

When people think of a household pet domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and fish come to mind. A domestic animal is an animal of a species that has been domesticated by humans so that they depend on humankind for survival. As time progresses and the years go by, more and more people are captivating exotic animals and are trying to domesticate them. Humans are taking wild animals from their natural habitats and are attempting to make them docile creatures for everyday living. Entities want to own these animals for home security, to trade and make profit, or just to gloat about owning something exotic. They feel like taking away their privilege to own an exotic animal is illegal and not right. In the website REXANO (Responsible Exotic Animal Ownership), Polly Britton states, “Animals are personal property; and we oppose legislation that restricts the private ownership or use of animals, or that inhibits free trade of any animal provided it meets Ohio Department of Agriculture testing and import requirements”. It may feel like freedoms are being stripped away if trading and using animals is illegal, however when there are bills and laws passed that go against the freedom of trading and using exotic animals, they are passed to protect the animals and not to take away someone’s rights. If it is illegal to trade people around the world for personal use, why should it be legal to ship living animals around the world. The animals have the abilities to be harmed more if they were owned than if they were in the wild.
