Cool Title Have you ever dreamt about how cool it would be to have an exotic pet? Imagine having a pet monkey, deer, chameleon, tiger, bear, lemur, owl, sloth, exotic snake, or exotic bird. It sounds pretty fun, right? The truth is that keeping exotic animals as pets is dangerous for both the animals and those around them. When someone desires to purchase an exotic animal, they most likely want a baby. Innocent animals are torn from their parents at a young age; poachers will even kill the animals’ parents to make retrieving the babies easier. Actions like this can cause distress and suffering to the animal, both mentally and physically. This can lead to behavioral issues in the future. When people haven’t adequately studied and researched animals’ needs, they often inadvertently kill the animals. When I was younger, one of my dad’s colleagues purchased a baby chameleon. The chameleon died after only a few months of owning it because he did not research about chameleons. He had put a plant in the chameleon’s enclosure that was toxic to its species. Not only are exotic animals harmed when they are owned, but they pose a threat to society. Animals in the wild have miles and miles of land to travel daily; in captivity, this is not available to them. The lax laws that are currently in place obviously are not serving their purpose well enough. Many states don’t even have restrictions. Another solution is animal sanctuaries. Animal sanctuaries take these exotic animals out of dangerous and illegal situations. They also prioritize the needs of the animal. And as a bonus, many sanctuaries allow the public to come and experience the animals up close. One tip is to do your research before you support a sanctuary and find out if it is legitimately helping the
