Genetic modification in both animals and plants for the purpose of faster and voluptuous growth rate is rapidly increasing. The three articles that were located, all revolve around the aspect of genetic modification in the food we consume. Genetically modified food are food derived from organisms that have undergone changes in their DNA through the processes of genetic engineering. It takes many steps to modify the genetics of an organism and they include isolating a particular gene and duplicating it several times. Additionally, there are a vast amount of benefits and concerns of genetic modification in food. The dispute between the pros and cons of genetic modification of food has resulted in many controversies around the world. …show more content…
Even though genetically modified meat is not approved by the government of Canada, there is still meat that comes to our tables that are modified. This happens as the meat genetically changes when it is cooked a certain way (pan-frying or barbequing), especially at high temperatures. When that particular meat is consumed, the consumers have a higher chance of getting renal cell carcinoma (which leads to kidney cancer) as the mutated genes in the meat can produce harmful compounds for humans to intake. On the topic of safety, genetic mutation in pigs can introduce new allergens, which can be concerning. In Canada, genetic modification of foods is not approved, so legally speaking people cannot consume genetically modified foods. The dispute between the benefits and disadvantages of genetically modifying foods has caused many controversies. The controversies include using genetic modification in the fruits and vegetables for medicinal purposes, the way in which meat is cooked to avoid genetic changes, and the modification in meat in general.
