Pros And Cons Of Ethanol

Ethanol Nonrenewable energy resources, such as fossil fuel, being depleted at an increasingly distressing rate. Therefore, other options for transportation fuel that consist of renewable energy resources, has been taken under consideration. Ethanol is such a resource, which encourages the rise of an optimistic outlook in satisfying the continuously staggering need for energy resources. Although, ethanol has an array of potentials to diminish the need for transportation fuel, it does not come without certain drawbacks. Nevertheless, the government seems determined to deviate from the current use of fossil fuel to bio fuel by consistently instating policies that fund and regulate the implementation of ethanol. Regardless of the government’s policies and enticements, I do not consider ethanol as a permanent solution to combat the environmental affects and the deterioration of fossil fuel. Liquid biofuels, such as ethanol, have positive affects in the potential to abate …show more content…
I don’t believe that in the long run ethanol is a feasible approach to decrease the amount of oil used to power vehicles. The production of ethanol requires an extensive amount of agricultural land, which will accelerate soil erosion and deforestation; further resulting in a rapidly diminishing biodiversity. Additionally, corn for example, that was geared towards producing goods such as oil, bread, sweeteners and feed for farm animals would become more scares and costly. Consequently, leading to a heightened price for meat products and most importantly will increase world hunger. I further belief that ethanol would be more suitable in terms of powering small engines such as mopeds and lawnmowers. Nevertheless, it is of immense importance that we further invest into environmental friendly renewable energy resources, such as solar energy, as an alternative to nonrenewable environmental hazarded energy

Producing the fuel is proving to be costly. “Presently the process of extracting cellulose from the plant is proving difficult and expensive.” (Clark,Josh “Grassoline” 6) The cost in order to produce the needed enzymes for the fermentation process will further raise the cost. However, even with the additional cost cellulosic ethanol at the end of the day would still be cheaper than gasoline.…

This will play a key role in designing engines for use with ethanol which will be discussed later. Despite these advantages, Ethanol does have one key disadvantage; that it is not as energy dense as other fuels. As can be seen in the table to the left, the decrease in ethanol content results in increase in energy content. Alternative energy is an issue with implications at the local, national, and international levels.…

Although, there has been significant improvement in the function of this engine, scientists and engineers are designing smaller and more fuel-efficient versions of this motor. Furthermore, there are engine technologies that you might see in the near future that will begin to achieve these new efficiency goals. Homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is"a combination of the operating principles of a gas engine and a diesel" (Csaba Csere, April 2010). Also, there is the revised stop start system (Csaba Csere, April 2010), which shuts off the engine when a driver is sitting at a stoplight, and when the driver releases the brake, restarts the engine. There are also engine designs which utilize ethanol more efficiently.…

I chose to represent biogas and how it is superior to corn ethanol. Biogas can be made from many different materials such as food waste, manure, and sewage. All of the materials are already being produced within the United States but not being efficiently used. By utilizing these resources the United States would become more self-sufficient. Therefore, as a whole the country would have to rely less on foreign firms that import natural gas by supporting industries that are already within the country.…

Another major stride that the EPA has come to create deals with our vehicles and the fuel they use. The EPA has released the RFS (renewable fuel standards) on the 30th of November 2015 and has two intentions. According to Manning, “ The RFS program is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while reducing US dependence on oil imports. Under the program, a certain amount of renewable fuels must replace or reduce the amount of petroleum-based transportation fuel, heating oil, or jet fuel (Manning).” The EPA plans on mixing fuel with more ethanol to help meet the goals of the RFS…

Ethanol is a renewable fuel with a complete cycle making it reusable. Since the production of ethanol is plant material the glucose inside the plant is synthesised from CO2 and water by photosynthesis, yeast fermentation generates ethanol from glucose (ehow.com). Ethanol is then used as an energy source and combusted which then produced CO2 and water completing the cycle with plants converting the CO2 and water back to glucose (ehow.com). With this cycle making ethanol renewable makes it a good alternative fuel to fossil fuels which are not…
