Prometheus: Titan Who Sided With The Greek Gods

Decent Essays
Prometheus is a titan who sided with the greek gods during the Titanomachy, a war between titans and gods. Because Prometheus sided with the gods he was able to avoid being set to tartarus. Prometheus’ father was the titan impetus (to pierce) who helped his brothers dethrone their brother uranus. Prometheus’ mother is Clymene the titan goddess of renown, fame, and infamy. Prometheus’ siblings are Atlas titan of astronomy and navigation, Menoetius titan of Violent anger, and Epimetheus (afterthought). Epimetheus is the opposite of his brother Prometheus which means forethought making Prometheus smart and Epimetheus foolish. Despite their differences both Prometheus and Epimetheus sided with the gods in the Titanomachy.

In this myth the gods are no longer against man but against each other and are power hungry. Powell points out that the gods act as “tricksters”, “Ogres”, “sexual victims”, and are “dangerous enemies”. The gods are still vengeful and ready to strike down anyone that threatens them, especially when it comes to their power. Zeus is especially fearful of Prometheus because he too is very wise. In the Theogony, gods are shown as beings higher than humans, but still drastically similar to how humans act, in terms of feelings and emotions. While gods do act more dramatically, the similarities are undeniable. This can display how humans give meaning to life because by giving gods similar attributes, mankind can look up to these gods to see what is right and what is wrong, like a guide to life. The Ancient Greeks gathered their own sense of morality by following the Theogony. Hesiod may have done this to make the gods idols while still keeping them relatable for the Greeks.…

The species I chose was Pterois volitans, which is commonly known as a lionfish or red lionfish. They are characterized by alternating white and red/brown stripes and contain venomous spines all over the body. Lionfish can grow up to 18.5 inches in length and are a species native to the Indo-Pacific region. Economically speaking lionfish are not regularly used in the seafood business, but are a huge part of the aquarium trade (Robbins). Due to the spines described above, there does not seem to be a predator that feeds on these fish in the Atlantic Ocean.…

Aeschylus depicts the ancient myth of Prometheus in his play, “Prometheus Bound” by showing the aftereffects of the titan’s disobedience. In this portrayal, Prometheus is being punished by the unjust tyrant, Zeus. By analyzing the deeds of Zeus, it can be determined that the great king of the gods is an unfit leader. He acts on impulse and pride, with no consideration for long-term prosperity or even the welfare of those over which he rules. From the start of the play, evidence of Zeus treating his fellow gods as slaves is unmistakable.…

Zeus is primarily the one who determines the fate of each character. He exists not only to oversee the heavens and humankind, but also to enforce his will in how smoothly or not the story continues. Segal insists that "on the divine level, Zeus 's program for retributive justice at the beginning is not an accomplished fact of the world order but appears as work-in-progress" as he prepares to assist directly or indirectly in any way for Odysseus ' safe return (491). Zeus makes his first appearance in the Odyssey in book I as he berates humankind for blaming the gods for their woes, "[a]h how shameless--the way these mortals blame the gods . . . with their own reckless ways, compound their pains beyond their proper share" (37-40).…
