Professor Hollenbeck

When talking about engineering one can see it as a challenge, but those challenges can be defeated. As for the lecture by professor Charles Hollenbeck, at Chaffey College on August 26 helped, in the sense that he made us envision of what your passion actually is. A quote that stood out when he stated, “Don’t go into a field for the money”. At first thought one couldn't understand why Professor Hollenbeck stated this until he introduced himself. He was a UCLA graduate from the School of Engineering in ‘67. Worked in the Aerospace industry for four years, professor Hollenbeck mentioned that after two years in the field, he was laid off. Which had him thinking and his wife encouraged him to return to school. Professor Hollenbeck when on to state, “physics was [his] favorite subject”. So he went back to school and attended CSU Long Beach and USC for his MS. In the process, professor Hollenbeck stated, “I took a fifty percent pay cut to teach physics at Chaffey”. What one gets from this is, that …show more content…
This is how professor Hollenbeck introduce the creativity aspect of engineering. Professor Hollenbeck did a great deal of research to introduce this question of “how creative are you”. As for myself, I believe that my creativity and critical thinking helps me with the challenges of mathematics (calculus), and problem solving (finding solutions). Moreover, to understand what I mean, as I am currently relearning AutoCAD (took mechanical drawing in high school); when I recently came across a drawing that required imagination and math to get the certain parts of the drawing done. My ingenious creativity help me prevail with the task. Furthermore, as students sometimes no matter how difficult objectives get we are in the process of

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

My interest in physics was initially ignited during my sophomore year. I signed up for AP Physics 1, taught by a teacher in his first year, right out of college. His main goal was to encourage students to apply physics to the world around them and identify the relevancy of the course material. I was immediately hooked and I bought book after book about Einstein's Theory of Relativity, the Big Bang, and quantum mechanics. I was eager to learn as much as I could; in doing so, I realized that working in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and applying equations, is something that I am truly passionate about.…

As you said in class, we have to measure it. When we are talking about the kind of creativity that can be taught, it is actually the kind of creativity that use reverse thinking for me. For example, we know what a normal alarm clock’s appearance and functionalities, then we think other than those properties as long as it is still an alarm clock. The normal alarm clock makes noise to wake you up, and then we use vibration instead. Being creativity, in this case, is making new ideas and designs in the way that different from others.…

Opportunity to Success I am not born to a rich family that has everything I want and need and clearly I am not born with any amazing skills either. I am just a normal person who is lucky enough to receive the wonderful opportunity of a formal education in America. Despite my family’s lack of English language skills and the limitations of my family’s resources, I have been able to navigate myself through the American educational system. With hard work, many hours of studying and dedication to school, I have found success in high school in just four years of speaking English. However, my hard work is not over yet.…

Throughout my high school experience, math has been a breeze. Many people approached me about pursuing engineering, that it was an obvious path to follow once I got to college; however, I wasn’t sure if I actually enjoyed the field or if it was the pressure placed on me that made me like it. My high school had a very interesting program that allowed me to intern at a hospital. I had always wanted to help people and believed that entering the medical field would allow me to do so. I was convinced that becoming a surgeon was for me until I spent a month in the ER.…

Creativity, an essential skill that can simultaneously help advance the world and communicate different perceptions of an idea, has gradually declined since 1990. Original ideas are vital when it comes to problem solving, technological advancements, communication, and much more. If the public worldwide stops creating new ideas, the world will experience a plateau rather than growth in development. In order to boost creativity in the population, it is best to start at the foundation of all skills, school. Supported by a scientific study and personal experience, creative thinking should be taught in school, because without explicit practice of thinking creatively, the mind begins to lose that skill.…

One of the ways I express my creative side is that I use unconventional ways to solve problems when conventional ways don't work. I would find a way to get the right answer by using unconventional methods because those methods seem to be more intuitive to me. For instance, during my sophomore year, I came up with a creative way to rearrange the variables to solve the logarithmic equations when the conventional way that was illustrated in the textbook and in class did not work for me. In addition, students are told to make connections between concepts and ideas in Science classes which can possibly complicate the learning process for me. I recalled in a Biology class, the teacher asked us to make flow charts, but I found flow charts were more…

Even within Math and Science, creativity is required in order to grow and move forward. New ideas have to be created for the world to evolve, but with the stifling of creativity, and the creation of a school system where making mistakes can cost students grades, college admissions, and ultimately their future, putting new ideas out into the open can be intimidating. This renders the education system counterproductive and creates leaders and innovators who succeed despite the structure of their education system instead of because of it. Creativity is a defining trait of civilization and should not be…

Education would not exist without teachers, nor would students gain knowledge without effective teachers. But what makes a good teacher? A good teacher is someone who motivates their students to do the best they can, and to be independent thinkers. A student who is an independent thinker not only acknowledges the teachers lessons, but finds additional information outside of class. Independent thinkers are defined as people who change the way they think, and question authorities.…

Creativity is a word that is heard throughout our time in school, however as you get older the word becomes less important because it has nothing to do with your “essential” subjects, or so some think. In the video we were asked to watch I could not help but agree on everything Sir Ken Robinson had to say. His ideas and way of thinking are remarkable and I found myself hanging on to every word and going back to listen to certain parts of the video again. I do, in fact, believe schools kill creativity, Robinson talks about how we as people do not grow into creativity, we grow out of it, or are better yet educated out of it. During elementary school I remember attending a music and art class every other day of the week and it was a chance for all of the students to be creative.…

There is an old Hebrew Proverb that states, "Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time". There is more truth to this that one would like to admit. We live in a time where we rush from place to place never taking the time to think about the happenings around us. It 's the so called rat race, as we often hear it dubbed. The endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit of what?…
