Interview with and Family Nurse Practitioner
The healthcare field is always evolving and one of the vital fields in demand is nursing. Nursing is both a challenging and rewarding career. The role of nurses is no longer limited to the basic care such as changing patients, providing medications, and offering support, as the past has indicated. In fact, the role of a nurse in the present-day is now advanced to being an advocate, teacher, researcher, counselor, and a caregiver. NPs can empower patients to make the right decision about their health conditions by educating and communicating with them therapeutically. NPs are qualified, through advanced education and clinical training to deliver a wide range of preventive and acute health care services to individuals of all ages. NPs can assess, diagnose, and treat many common acute and chronic conditions, interpret lab results and x-rays and in some states, NPs are able to prescribe and manage medications and other therapies (O’Grady, 2008).
An important role that NPs are obligated to do is provide teaching and supportive counseling, with an emphasis on prevention of illness and health maintenance as well as referring patients to other health professionals as needed (O’Grady, 2008). The author had the pleasure to interview a Nurse Practitioner who provided her contact information, educational background, current practice, some of the APN function/core competencies she faces as well as legal/ethical issues in her line of work.

Kazeem experience is direct care in which she does a face to face interaction with her patients, educate, diagnose, and prescribe medications under a physician supervision. She also provides consultation by assessing patients, evaluating labs, review medications, and provide referrals when necessary. Unfortunately, in the state of California NPs are not allowed to work independently, they are required to collaborate with a physician. Mrs. Kazeem provides expert coaching and teaching to make sure each of her patients understands their plan of care and their treatment
