Counselors shall take appropriate professional precautions when a dual relationship cannot be avoided, such as informed consent, consultation, supervision, and documentation that ensures that judgment is not impaired and no exploitation occurs. Hemphill covered the importance of how to properly share information with other professionals. Under the ASCA, professional school counselors should promote awareness and adherence to appropriate guidelines regarding confidentiality, the distinction between public and private information and staff consultation.
