Professional Accountability In Nursing Essay

Professional accountability in the nursing field is described as a core concept that supports professional nursing practice by nursing education credentialing agencies and professional nursing organizations (Krautschied). In terms that anyone can understand, professional accountability is summed up as taking responsibility for one’s actions. When taking responsibility for certain actions, it does not necessarily mean that what one did was wrong, it could mean things could have been done differently for a better outcome and realizing that so the next time changes can be made. Professional accountability can cause improvement in healthcare in many different aspects, it can be hard to own up to responsibilities due to repercussions, and there is a lot to be learned through actions and incidents that require accountability.

If nurses and other healthcare personnel were held to higher accountability standards and were honest about actions that were even minor in the wrong, quality of care could possibly reach an all-time high of improvement. Those minor wrongs could teach the upcoming wave of nurses a lesson and the same mistakes could be avoided and pave the way for more efficient healthcare delivery. In response to better quality of care, the access to care will improve because there will be more opportunities for more healthcare settings, which also allows for more personnel and job opportunities.
