Profession of Arms: Role of the Human Resources Sergeant To be a professional is to understand, embrace, and competently practice the expertise of the profession (The Profession of Arms, 2010). The Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms, further explains the definition of the profession of arms as a vocation comprised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power. “I am an expert, I am a professional” often recited by American Soldiers, in the Soldier’s Creed, are attributes of the competent professional in their respective military fields. In the military, the human resources community (HR) complete a vast amount of support functions at all levels. This paper will discuss the Human Resources Sergeant and the significant role they play in accomplishing the Army mission. Noncommissioned Officers confidently explain to anyone who will listen that they are the “backbone of the Army.” While this statement is not untrue it is a Human Resources Sergeant who essentially keeps the Army together. The HR community provides continuity of service and support to Soldiers whether they are deployed or at home station (FM 1-0). …show more content…
Regulatory guidance and policies are continuously changing how the military operates on a daily basis. These changes never slow the HR community down and HR Sergeants continue to serve as advisors to S-1 and higher headquarters on personnel regulatory guidance. As subject matter experts their expertise covers all the attributes of an expert listed in The Profession of Arms. These characteristics include technical, human development, moral-ethical, political and cultural expertise. The HR Sergeants technical expertise can be seen in their abilities to proficiently use the many computer based programs to document personnel changes and training, while their retention responsibilities show their proficiency as human development
