Confidentiality is a requirement of IACP (2014). Counsellors in private practice need to risk assess, “Effective risk-management strategies such as obtaining informed consent, documenting clinical activities”, (Knapp et al, 2008, p. 614) are essential for protection of both the counsellor and the client. Policies regarding disclosure of abuse, suicide intervention and a contract detailing the confines of confidentiality are some of the basic tenets counselling, (IACP, 2014) Client information needs to be kept in a safe environment and adhere to (IACP, 2011). I have a strong work ethic and in the past have not been good at saying no. This can occur when I am faced with uncertainty and in trying new ventures. It is important to realise that I do not look after myself then how can my business flourish? A form of self-care involves charging for your services and viewing this as “Valuing yourself financially”, (Fay, 2014).
Required Competencies of a Private Practice
McMahon (2015) suggests that you need to be ready to have your own private practice. “It takes experience, in terms of energy, focus and time (including networking) not only to reach where you would like to be but, more importantly, to understand where you would like to be”, (Sutton, 2007). My career to date has been on caring for people. For all the numerous courses I have completed none have had business in their detail. This assignment has taught me that I have a lot of information and knowledge to gain about business.
