The Cask of Amontillado Theme Analysis In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe the theme is presented in a way of revenge and pride. Montresor’s pride is what pushes him so hard to finally get revenge for what Fortunato did; unfortunately we never actually know what Fortunato did to Montresor. Montresor then uses Fortunato’s pride against him by making up a story about “The Cask of Amontillado” knowing that Fortunato loves wine, Montresor tricks Fortunato into walking into his foreseeable death. Through these two people and the events that happen Poe uses symbols and irony throughout the short story and shows the theme of revenge and pride and how it can push a man to the very end. Knowing that Fortunato would do anything to taste the cask of Amontillado Montresor begins to lure him in even further telling Fortunato that he has plans for Luchresi to taste it because “if anyone has a critical turn it is he”(166). Fortunato is sure that no one is better at wine tasting then he is, insulting Luchresi saying, “Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry. Constantly Montresor is showing his concern for Fortunato’s health offering to go back if he wanted to. Fortunato insisted on staying and proceeding to the destination once stating “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough”(167). Montresor replies with true knowing Fortunato’s real fate is to die buried in the catacombs. Montresor’s family coat of arms is described as a shield with a giant gold human foot in a field of azure crushing a serpent whose fangs are imbedded in the heel. The theme for revenge is even presented in their arms, as Fortunato is the snake in the grass, he bit Montresor and Montresor’s big gold foot is coming down crushing Fortunato as a result. Fortunato being led for a while now and Montresor constantly keeping him content with wine he doesn’t question anything that has happened nor does he grow suspicious.
