The genus Staphylococcus is a common inhabitant of the skin and mucous membranes. Staphylococci are organisms that are gram positive clusters or tetrads. They stain purple with the Gram’s stain. The organisms lack spores, flagella and some species are encapsulated. There are about 30 species of Staphylococcus species. Some of the pathogens include …show more content…
The top CDC recommendation for preventing MRSA infections include: strict hand hygiene guidelines, contact precautions including isolation and the use of personal protective equipment such as gloves and gowns, to recognize patients previously infected or colonized with MRSA, to report MRSA testing immediately, to educate healthcare personnel on MRSA infections, facility participation in active surveillance testing , patient decolonization and chlorohexidine bathing of MRSA infected patients (Jacobs, 2014).
Prudent use of antibiotics is a must in order to avoid antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The overuse of antibiotics is a common clinical practice. Ensuring that antibiotics are prescribed only …show more content…
But in 2002, the first case of complete resistance to this drug was reported. (Talaro, 2008, p.375). New treatments for MRSA are needed. Older antibiotics mention earlier such as Trimethoprim, Sulfamethoxazole, Tetracyline and clindamycin are being reexamined and used to treat infections successfully. New treatment options for MRSA infections include linezolid, quinupristin, dalfopristin, daptomycin and tigecycline. All of these antibiotics except for linezolid require IV administration. There was a study done in 2014 using rabbits corneas to evaluate the effectiveness of topically applied tigecycline for the treatment of MRSA . This study provided the first reported evidence that tigecycline has the therapeutic potential for the treatment of keratitis caused by MRSA. (Goktas,
