After reading through the list of topics, one stuck out to me specifically. The idea of diversity due to the value of appearance. In society, we value beauty and appearance over almost everything else. There’s so many standards and expectations set, and we all think we have to meet them. The song I chose explains this in a relatable way that connects to many young people. Due to Olivia Rodrigo being a young singer, she mainly focuses her music on feelings that teenagers can relate to. The song I specifically chose is called Pretty isn’t Pretty. As the title explains, it’s about the struggles of not feeling pretty enough due to the unattainable beauty standards in today's world. The connection she builds between herself and the listeners is through the language she uses. She doesn't use childish language, but she also doesn’t use very mature language. She uses cuss words and casual language to make it more relatable to teenagers. The phrases used such as, “I don’t know why I even tried” and, “I chased some dumb ideal my entire life” are similar to something you would hear in a normal conversation. She uses language that is relatable and casual to engage her audience, as the book Looking out Looking in claims, “...communicators are attracted to others whose style of speaking is similar to theirs,” (Adler & Proctor II & Manning, 2023, p.195). This is the process of affiliation, which means she’s utilizing her language to connect with her target audience. This song is targeted towards teenagers and young people, so she uses the slang to show that the speaking style is similar. When hearing the song, many will associate it as a song for teenagers.
